Ipswich Firefighters and neighboring departments extinguished a spreading chimney fire Saturday night, thanks to an alert resident on Meadowview Lane.
Acting Chief Lee Prentiss says the resident spotted flames coming from a large wooden chimney on the roof of 3 Meadowview, and called 911. As Ipswich Engine 4 headed to the scene, an arriving police officer confirmed that the structure was on fire. Engine 4, with Lt. Gus McInnis and Firefighters Jack Bowen and Curtis Levasseur, arrived to find embers falling onto the roof of the large two-and-a-half story home. McInnis announced a working fire, activating Ipswich off-duty and call firefighters as well as mutual aid from neighboring municipalities. A ladder truck from Rowley and an additional engine from Essex were called to the scene to help, while crews from Topsfield and Gloucester covered the Ipswich Station.
The Engine 4 crew quickly extinguished the fire, and with the Rowley truck crew looked for extension to other parts of the home. None was found and all crews cleared shortly before 9:00 pm. Acting Chief Prentiss reports no one was injured.
