Open burning season in Massachusetts ends on May 1. After this date, open-air fires are prohibited until the next season begins on Jan. 15, 2027.
Permits obtained by local departments to conduct open burning will expire on May 1. Open burning done outside of the designated open burning season can result in fines.
Alternatives to burning: Instead of burning brush and debris, you may:
- Use a wood chipper to utilize the materials for landscaping
- Bring your yard waste to the Transfer Station on Town Farm Rd
- Compost the materials
