Lock boxes are used to allow first responders quick access to homes and businesses while keeping those properties secure. There are two kinds of lock boxes:
Commercial Knox Boxes allow first responders to quickly gain entry to locked properties without having to force entry. These strong, safe, and secure key boxes are accessed by a special key that only the fire department possesses.
Commercial Knox Boxes can be purchased on the company website. You will be asked to identify the Ipswich Fire Department on a drop-down menu. “Standard” commercial Knox Boxes are adequate for almost every property.
Once your Knox Box is installed, contact the Fire Department and a Department member will come to lock your keys inside.
If you have any questions about Knox Box requirements, purchase or installation, do not hesitate to contact the Fire Prevention Office.

Through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, we install free residential lock boxes in the homes of our seniors. Like commercial lock boxes, these can only be opened by keys kept locked in our fire trucks.
